Anna In England

Anna is in the U.K. for work. She sent these photos.

The highlight of her trip, it seems, was a visit to Stonehenge at dawn where she managed to be one of a handful of people who are allowed each morning to wander among the stones.

But she spent most of her trip in Sheffield, a once vibrant steel town that has gone through the death and rebirth that many steel towns have experienced around the world. Sheffield had the disadvantage of being a strategic target during World War II and so was heavily bombed.

Sheffield has been known for its knives, and later its cutlery, since the 14th century. Above is a picture of the ceiling of Cutler's Hall where a conference Anna was attending was held. Cutler's Hall has been the seat of the cutler's guild since the early 1600s. The current building on the site was built in 1832.

This is a display of some cutlery at Cutler's Hall.

And this is what Anna applied her cutlery to while in Sheffield: a baked potato with baked beans, hidden under a mound of shredded cheese.
