Super Typhoon

We are currently in the direct path of a "super typhoon" named Usagi. I am supposed to fly out to Beijing tomorrow, a few hours before it hits. Anna and True will stay hunkered down in the apartment. School will likely be cancelled on Monday.

Starting in 2009, the Hong Kong Observatory begain classifying strong typhoons as either severe or super. A severe typhoon has winds of at least 92 mph, while a super typhoon has winds of at least 120 mph (measured as an average speed during ten minute intervals - hurricanes are measured in 1 minute intervals and so wind speeds tend to be reported higher).

This is the latest report from the Hong Kong Observatory:

At 7 p.m., Super Typhoon Usagi was estimated to be about 610 kilometres east-southeast of Hong Kong (near 21.0 degrees north 119.9 degrees east) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 18 kilometres per hour, entering the northeastern part of the South China Sea and moving towards the coastal areas of Guangdong.



Nonetheless, it was sunny and only mildy breezy today and I spent a long time in the sea.
