Fathers, Grandfathers and Forefathers

Dad accompanied me on the drive up to New Hampshire to deliver True to camp.

We took the opportunity to visit some Smith landmarks, including this house, which was built in the mid-1700s by Samuel Smith, our first clearly identifiable Smith ancestor in the New World.

We continued to New Brunswick, Canada, to visit with some distant cousins (fourth or fifth cousins, depending on whether you are talking about Dad or me). They still own the farm that Andrew Smith, Samuel Smith's son, lived on when he resettled in Canada after the Revolutionary War. This is a picture of Dad in front of the house that Andrew built in 1801.

As most people reading this blog now know, the Smiths were loyalists who sided with King George during the war. They got involved in counterfeiting the new continental currency in order to help destabilize the rebel economy, were caught and fled behind British lines. Their farms in New Hampshire were confiscated and they were evacuated to Canada by the British Army after the war. You can read it all at www.smith-history.blogspot.com
