China Club

We had a wonderful Saturday night out with friends, celebrating the birthday of one of them. He is a member of the China Club, which occupies the top floors of the old Bank of China building.

We had a private room, filled with original oil paintings and books, as is much of the club.

The old Bank of China is the tall building on the left. You can see the club's terrace, which in this dated photo has a green floor. Anna and I were there for a party more than ten years ago.

The squat building on the right is the Legislative Council building. Anna, pregnant with True, was on the Legislative Council balcony with a bunch of local pro-democracy celebrities on July 1, 1997, the night Hong Kong reverted to Chinese sovereignty.

Here she is passing the Legislative Council building on our way to the China Club.

The building outlined in white light that you see behind Anna in this slideshow is the new Bank of China building, designed by I.M. Pei and where Anna worked for Newsweek years ago.
