King Cake

We had a couple galettes des rois - what they call King Cakes in Louisiana. It's a Catholic tradition. Normally, you eat them around Ephiphany, January 6.

The cakes in northern France are buttery and flakey with a base of frangipani. Inside each is hidden a "feve," French for fava bean. The old fava bean, however, has long since been replaced by a tiny porcelain trinket.

According to tradition, the person who gets the "feve" is crowned king. The cakes come with a paper crown. True got the feve this year.

True has gotten the feve more than anyone else in the family.

This year, the feve was a tiny pain au chocolat.

The feves from the bakery Paul have the year printed on the bottom. Many people collect feves. We have a little collection ourselves.

We had an earlier galette des rois when True was on a sleepover. Anna got the feve that time. It was a little basket of croissants.
